The N-3B is a heavy-duty military parka originally designed for aircrew members flying in extremely cold climates. Known as the "Snorkel Parka," it was developed in the 1950s by the U.S. Air Force for use in temperatures as low as -60°F (-51°C). The parka is characterized by its long length, extending below the waist, and is made from water-resistant nylon for durability. It is insulated with a thick layer of synthetic fibers, often polyester, to provide maximum warmth.
Key features include a large, adjustable hood lined with faux fur (or sometimes genuine fur) to protect the face from harsh wind and snow, which can be zipped up into a narrow tunnel for added insulation—hence the nickname "Snorkel." The coat usually features a front zipper covered by a button-down storm flap to prevent wind penetration, four exterior pockets (two large hand-warmer pockets, two smaller chest pockets), and a drawstring waist to further retain heat.
